Mona Merhi / Lebanon
Artist-in-Residence: 29 Sept – 4 Nov

Mona Merhi is a writer, producer, director, actress and cultural activist. She was born in 1979 in Beirut, Lebanon and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts. Additionaly, she holds a Diploma of Higher Studies in Theatre. She started her career as an actress and then shifted to writing. She has published 2 books, Festivity under Water/ Tabula rasa(2006, plays) and Out of Service, (2009, novel and flip book), which was awarded a publishing grants in 2006 from Cultural Resource, Tamer Institute and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

Merhi has written and directed 3 short films nominated for awards and screened in many festivals: “Family Negative” (2000); “A tape” (2002), nominated for awards in the “European Film Festival” and Ismailia Film Festival| Egypt” and selected to be part of “Berlinale Talent Campus 2003”; and “Shining window” (2006), a tribute to the July war.

In 2009, Merhi founded SAHBEH, a cultural non-profit project aiming at promoting reading among various target groups in the community.

A Book fuses in its milieu and entrenches with time. A Book becomes as random as the space that surrounds it intensified with images and sounds. A Book is as dynamic as time: time passes and the book passes by…roaming alone in the city.
