In ‘Gateau Soiree’ the glass cube is interpreted as a display case at a confectionary. It is inspired by the perverse perfection of display; the finely formed and exquisitely decorated bite-sized cakes and chocolates contently sitting there coolly composed, hour after hour, to tempt and whet the palette from a distance. On display they appear simple, unblemished and delightful in their rigid order. Gateau de Soiree require small mouths, small nibbles and a napkin to be eaten in good taste. With obsessive etiquette they preserve themselves as samplers of delights and mask their potential to become what they would themselves consider to be grotesque.
These are the b-class gateaux trying as hard as they can to fit into their tutu skirts and doilies, to sit as rigidly perfect, composed, and symmetrical as they can.
